we’re etch.

A reality-based healthcare thought partner.

Thanks for stopping by.

What does it mean to be a reality-based thought partner?

We excel at uncovering insights to understand why people do what they do that lead to the right problem to solve.

We aptly apply foresight to smartly prepare a brand, team, or organization for the future.

We consistently create practical solutions that bear fruit and endure over time.

Our thinking and work is free of typical consultant obfuscation, large-scale analytics, or conceptual answers that only look good on paper. We’ve designed our company to ensure direct involvement from seasoned individuals on every project. And to keep bureaucracy out.

We call our unique offering etch realism. And it’s exactly why you need to call us.

How did we get here?

We grew up in the world of healthcare advertising and achieved many notable accomplishments along the way. But as the pharmaceutical industry started to mature a decade ago, we foresaw two massive changes ahead:

  • Early signals indicated the traditional drug company model could not be sustained long term
  • Healthcare agencies would be driven to deliver cost efficiencies above all else

We knew then that innovation had to be pursued differently.

Bolstered by our convictions, we donned our entrepreneurial hats and walked away from every classic measure and trapping of success to pursue our beliefs. No label applied to the journey we were embarking on, so we drew inspiration from the architect of the University of California, Irvine. He designed a beautiful campus but refused to lay any sidewalks initially. His wish was to let paths form naturally in the grass and then overlay the concrete.

Thus we became "a walk on grass company". It’s all about being authentic.

Where have we helped?

The paths customers take with us primarily focus on strategic problem solving, better decision making, translating thinking into action, or new ways of working. Our capabilities span the following:

Navigating uncertainty
Insights and ideation
Soft skill development
Business and strategic planning
Organizational evolution

Of course, some clients come to us simply when they don't know where else to turn because we always figure out the right path forward. Engagements span the spectrum of biopharmaceutical companies, from start-ups to big pharma in the commercial, development, medical, or cultural space. Our relationships run the gamet from team leads through executive leadership.

Navigating Uncertainty

FutureCasting (a label we coined over a decade ago) is a scenario planning exploration of how a market may play out in the future, regardless of uncertainties. It provides a strategic framework to enable more effective decision making and drive alignment.

THE SITUATION: A late-entrant player in HIV needed a novel approach to a maturing and relatively satisfied market that had many effective and safe treatment options available. They sought a partner who could develop unique market opportunities and inform portfolio decisions.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: Determine how the team could enable major development decisions for their portfolio that were free from developer’s bias and reflective of market realities and emerging trends.

CUSTOMER FUTURECASTING: Orchestrated a scenario planning simulation with active HIV treaters and patient advocates to identify the biggest market uncertainties. Their real-world views on potential future dynamics and new product adoption trade-offs richly informed unique investment recommendations.

THE DELIVERABLE: A completely new narrative for HIV that reflected the forward-thinking opportunity to spin the franchise into a separate company and position it in a broader and more relevant manner: dedicated to aging lives.

Soft Skill Development

Whether dubbed "connectivity," "emotional intelligence", or "good judgment", soft skills are integral to business success yet difficult to master. Our customized offerings repeatedly build positive team dynamics, better alliances, and stronger leaders (not to mention countless promotions).

THE SITUATION: A large pharmaceutical conglomerate and a Silicon Valley start-up partnered to create an industry-first innovation—a digestible technology for mental health—to drive improved value across stakeholders.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: The two companies had vastly divergent cultures, structures, and ways of operating yet needed to align on how they would work as one entity to accomplish something that had never been done before.

CONTEXTUALIZED SUCCESS: Designed and facilitated the inaugural summit to define long-term success from each company’s perspective and align on a vision. Created a governance charter, initial responsibilities and interpersonal/team relationships that maximized their respective strengths.

THE DELIVERABLE: A prepared and unified alliance, focused on achieving their common goals, eager to support each other, and sharing the commitment that success was only achievable together.

Organizational Evolution

We excel at identifying the root cause of business issues and uncovering the deeper context of an organizational problem. Our approach informs a realistic path forward and enables meaningful change.

THE SITUATION: Executive leaders at a top global pharmaceutical company sought to reduce attrition in late-stage drug development. Rather than work with a usual “go-to” consulting company, they thought etch would yield more authentic insights.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: Identify the factors and commonalities that led to the failure of multiple compounds in late-stage development. The mission was to go deep to determine the cause.

A RETROSPECTIVE ASSESSMENT: Conducted in-depth interviews with close to 100 cross-functional team members. Solicited reflective responses by posing thought-provoking questions and listening without biases. The learnings revealed that the drugs didn’t fail – the decision-making process did. And while no one wanted to hear it, the problem stemmed from a deep-rooted culture of being inwardly focused.

THE DELIVERABLE: The findings reverberated throughout the company and led to lasting change: the implementation of a robust decision-making process at key points in drug development and an evolved culture, both designed to minimize organizational biases, increase transparency, and bolster accountability at all levels.

ETCH REALISMS

Powerful perspectives that give you a flavor for what we believe and how we operate.

"leadership is action, not position"

It means saying what you do and doing what you say because actions cultivate trust. Donald McGannon knew this from his own experience as a media iconoclast. Our insights into what and what not to do help build trusted behaviors and better leaders. What does the world need now? Real leaders.

Learn more from our experiences and become a better leader.

"It is better to be roughly right than precisely wrong"

We don't run in circles with 20th century economists, but we certainly agree with John Maynard Keynes on this sentiment. We embrace uncertainty, and show how to shape thinking and take action despite the unknowns.

"Small is mighty"

Like the ancient Greeks, we know this—and we are. Yet we’ve amassed some very big lessons to share about the real world of business. Our experience helps create practical solutions that work for everyday business. We’re not big data, but we promise, our insights have big impact. Learn more.

"Culture eats strategy for breakfast"

Peter Drucker got it, so did leaders at Ford and IBM and it’s why we built etch the way we did. Culture provides competitive advantage as it’s the very real and vital enabler of strategy, engagement, and business performance. We show our clients tangible ways to leverage it.

"Life is not a dress rehearsal"

And we only get one shot at it, right? We embrace Rose Tremain's sentiment wholeheartedly. The way we approach our personal and professional lives is a choice we make every day. We choose happiness…and strive to make those around us happy too.
